About us

■Who we are

POSSE is an independent non-profit organization (NPO) which actively supports labor issues in Japan. The aim of POSSE is to build and maintain a living and working environment which respects each individual`s human rights. Our main activities focus on the following; Advising on work disputes, conducting research on working environments, proposing labor and social insurance scheme policies, and providing awareness trainings on labor law and worker’s rights.

Currently we have more than 200 members and the core members, in which the majority are young people in their 20s, are directing our actions. So far we have four offices in Japan, Tokyo, Kyoto and Sendai and we continue to support people through our various counterparts in other regions. Our actions are supported by endowment and our members’ contributions.

■Our History

POSSE was established in 2006 by young students and graduate workers in Tokyo. During this period, the Japanese economy was in recession, and therefore the employment market was in a difficult situation. Many young people had difficulties in finding a job, yet it was commonly believed that this was the young individual’s problem and not an issue caused by society. Due to the lack of jobs, the number of young temporary/contract workers increased and as a result, many young people were faced with poverty despite the fact that they were working full-time. These young people questioned this issue and decided to work together with the goal to change the social situation. Since then, we have taken various actions, such as consulting work disputes (currently up to more than 300 cases per year), conducting research by interviewing around 3000 workers in Tokyo, proposing labor policies through magazine publications, and providing worker’s right awareness trainings in high schools with the support of professional lawyers and professors. Our actions have been widely received by many major media in Japan including NHK (Japan broadcasting corporation), Asahi Shinbun and xxx
